The map wasnt needed in White wolf imo. A map is only useful when the world or travels of a character/s is detailed enough.

I think maps are a bit restrictive to the storytelling because if DG bases a Drenai story in a new country then some anorak will say "that country is not on the map".
If DG is happy with the size and scope of the world he has created then it is ok but if he feels the need to create more lands it could cause a problem for the the purists amongst his fans

Not neccesarily, because DG uses the 'multiverse' theory reocurringly throughout his books, so it could always be on a different world - one that changed more dramatically and earlier on... Ok, that is a bit lame. But also, the map looks more like it is a map of Europe and Asia type of thing, there could be other land masses off of the map. If your thinking of another country in the area surrounding the Drenai, then there could always be a story about a country that would be conquered and incorporated into the victorious country.

I think that the map was really good. Fans had been attempting to draw up a map of the lands surrounding the Drenai for ages, this is more definitive...

This is a fan map by Zetetic who has been know to wander these corridors occasionally. Also I figured this was a 'definitive' map in that this was the whole of DG's world as regards the books of the Drenai.

I love maps...they make a great visual aid with a book and also you can see the author has thought through the concept and journey his people will make (and if the distance is possible)

The Map on dros 's site is Great, have not seen the others yet, but if they are any where near as good i shall make the effort

I liked the map, it really helps a reader get an idea of the layout of the nations/places in any DG book. Plus Parm is right how a map aids the reading experience off an book.

I also found the map helpful as it put an end to me seeing a reference by a character for a nation and thinking "Where the hells is that" Now its like, "Where the hells that....(check the map).....Ahhhh"

I agree with Curian, the map was a help.
Have just read WW and now understand what others have said about the book. It has a different feel from the off. Skilgannon has the usual qualities, is somehow vastly different. It was refreshing and vibrant and I thought it rocked - the best, in my opinion, since Waylanders last outing.

Just got finished re-reading this. I found i liked it a whole lot more the second time through.

Question: Rabalyn, does he play an important role in any other book or his is just a minor character in WW?

So far a minor, but DG has a habit of developing characters at a later junction

I am rereading WWolf in anticipation SOND released next Month (April 1st 04)and I am enjoying the whole thing much more, rather than rushing through it to find out what happens, I am savouring it.
I would also like to see Rabalyn's character expanded on,could he pass on 'the code' to a new future major character?

I've recently gone back to both the Skilgannon books and have to say I enjoyed White Wolf a bit more after a fair amount of time away from DG. What I noticed was that WW seemed to be broken up into two parts, pre-Druss and Druss. Pre-Druss I define as being up until they rest in the Inn inside the city and Druss is when they set off in search of his friend. The pre-Druss part I liked, the priest section isn't new but works well for introducing Skilgannon - who is still a little underdone characterisation wise imo, and we have some new characters to adjust to in Rabalyn and the fat priest whose name I've forgotten. Once Druss arrives properly and it becomes his quest though it still becomes very familiar and samey. More than that though I think it stops Skilgannon growing as a character, its like once Druss shows up Skilgannon is stuck as only slightly more than a one-dimensional character and an amalgamation of all the hard-nosed characters DG has written. I think its a good book but its too predictable even if you've read only a few of DG's previous works.

I'm just re-reading WW for the third time, and have to post just how much I agree with Katers above observations, especialy about Druss holding back Skilgannons expansion as a character (like how did he come by the shiriken belt buckel?) I think as I've posted before DG's intention WAS to do another Skilgannon book after FoK,so maybe we would have seen more devoplopment then, whether it would have been pre or post resurection? maybe Stella could shed some light-(Dros?interview?)
Still after all thats said and done I still found WW to be classic Gemmell and I'm enjoying the book immensely.
